I believe that the work I have carried out over the last few years from West Palm Beach and other places within and outside the US has motivated a good many professional and amateur polo players seeking to achieve good physical fitness and prevent future injuries. Nowadays, there is always a trainer or physical therapist in most top polo teams.
My approach is based on seeking to achieve each player’s good physical fitness. Basically, we begin with a test in order to know each player’s level. Based on this we develop and focus on the needs of each one.
One of the most important points as regards training is a flexibility workout, where 70% of our approach is focused on this type of exercise. In addition, cardio workout combined with some type of weightlifting exercise helps towards players’ overall improvement.
Other very important points are the moment of the game, and before and after the match. When I say ‘before’ I mean players’ physical training and warm-up, combining a slow trot with some mobility and stretching exercises (to prevent injuries), and when I say ‘after’ I refer to cooling down and relaxing muscles, focusing on proper stretching exercises after the mach (to help achieve recovery).
All these steps throughout the seasons mark the difference between one player and another, whether due to debilitation related to lack of physical fitness as opposed to one who is physically fit, or in the case of those players who are over 30 years old in which case recovering from pains is slower than at age 20, thus enabling them to continue to complete at almost the same level of a 20-year-old player.
At present, I'm working with teams such as Las Monjitas, Orchard Hill, Mt. Brilliant, Faraway, Lucchese, among others. Furthermore, we are covering different seasons within and outside the US all year round, wherever polo may demand so. Polo buddies, don’t wait any longer! It’s time to begin and extend your useful life as polo players as well as your quality of life.
My best wishes to you all, and remember to mount in good health.
